Metaoptics: From Lab to Fab, For Everyone
Dr. Wang Zeng obtained his PhD in Nanyang Technological University in 2018 and is a principal investigator and group leader (DeepMeta Group) at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), A*STAR. Our primary interests lie in exploring novel materials and methods for applications in electronic and photonic devices and commercializing technologies for economic and social progress.
Our work aims to tackle pressing challenges for the coming era of metaoptics by conducting creative use-inspired basic research and filling the transition gap between tech-in-lab and use-in-fab with our industrial partners. We are promoting teamwork and passionate to solve complex problems. Our goal is to bring metaoptics to all the people.

06 Aug 2026|Dr. Wang Zeng has been invited and gave a talk in the AIS2026 in Jeju, Korea.
23 July 2026|Our poster was awarded best poster award in CDF day 2026 and SGD 1,500 travel budget.
22 Jul 2026 | Commercialization | MetaOptics expands Direct Laser Writer technology to the United States. MetaOptics announced an agreement to deploy its Direct Laser Writer (DLW) at the University of Arizona’s Center of Semiconductor Manufacturing, marking an important step in the international commercialization of the technology and its expansion into the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem. Installation is expected to commence in 2027, providing a platform for rapid metalens prototyping, fabrication, and small-volume production. For details.
11 Jul 2026 | Our team published a research article entitled “High Numerical Aperture Metalens for the Deep Ultraviolet” in Advanced Materials. The work demonstrates a record-high-NA AlN metalens operating at 266 nm, providing a compact high-resolution optical platform for deep-ultraviolet imaging, inspection, and nanophotonics. For details.
26 May 2026 | Our team published a review article entitled “Recent Developments in Deep-Ultraviolet Flat Optics” in Nanophotonics. The review summarizes recent advances in materials, device concepts, fabrication, and system-level development of deep-ultraviolet flat optics, and discusses their emerging opportunities in high-resolution imaging, nanofabrication, spectroscopy, and compact DUV photonic systems. 07 Mar 2026 | Our Team published a research article entitled “Bipolar Photovoltaic Effect in InSe/MoO₃ Van der Waals Heterostructure for Spontaneous Light Polarization Detection” in InfoMat. The work demonstrates polarization-dependent reversal of photocurrent polarity in an InSe/MoO₃ heterostructure, enabling direct mapping of orthogonal polarization states into distinct electrical signals for compact polarization sensing, optical communication, and optical information processing. 28 Feb 2026 | Commercialization | Direct Laser Writer contributes significantly to MetaOptics’ commercial revenue growth. MetaOptics reported 891% year-on-year revenue growth for FY2025, with the increase primarily attributed to the delivery of a Direct Laser Writer to a customer in Taiwan, together with increased sales of metalenses and modules. The result represents a significant milestone in translating the DLW technology from R&D into commercial equipment sales. For details.
28 Jan 2026 | Our team published a research article entitled “Synergistic Cavity-Enhanced Photoresponse in Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Heterostructures” in npj Nanophotonics. The work combines a MoS₂/SnSe₂ van der Waals heterostructure with an asymmetric Fabry–Pérot cavity to strongly enhance light absorption and photoresponse, demonstrating a promising route toward high-performance and low-power 2D photodetectors. 04 Sep 2025 | Our team published a review article entitled “AI-Assisted Wafer-Scale Exfoliation and Transfer of 2D Materials: Status, Challenges and Perspectives” in AI for Science. The article reviews scalable exfoliation and transfer technologies for two-dimensional materials and highlights how artificial intelligence, machine vision, and automated robotic manipulation could enable reliable, high-throughput, wafer-scale manufacturing of 2D materials. 17 Jan 2025| Recently, we wrote a preview for a paper published in Device by Cell Press done by Deep Jariwala and co-workers. This paper reported a 2D material-based phase modulator using electrostatic doping to shift between exciton-polariton and exciton-trion-polariton states, which enables 2 Pi phase control with an atomic thin multi-quantum-well (MQW) structure..
